Thursday’s At Shah Jamal

About

Thursdays at Shah Jamal is an immersive documentary project exploring time, devotion, and embodied ritual at the Shah Jamal shrine in Lahore. Following the dwindling community of dhol players who perform there each Thursday, the work traces the rhythms of dhamaal as an act of spiritual surrender. Within Sufi tradition, the dance dissolves masculinity, allowing devotees to inhabit a feminine expression of longing and union. The shrine becomes a space where music, movement, and belief resist social order, gathering worshippers as sahelian—a collective bound by devotion rather than gender.
